Kaleiçi (Old Town)

Antalya, located in the ancient Pamphylia region, II. It was founded by Attalos (160 BC-138 BC) under the name Attaleia. Kaleiçi, which grew rapidly with the Pergamon Empire, was then under the rule of pirates for a certain period of time. After the Roman Empire captured the city, the walls were expanded. Thus, the port in the region has risen to an important commercial position. It was during this period that Hadrian (76–138 AD) visited Attaleia and today’s popular Three Gates were built.

After the Romans, the Byzantines dominated the region. Then, in 1207, the Seljuks (1st Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev (1164-1211)) captured the city, but lost the city in a short time. In 1216, Izzeddin Keykavus (1180-1220) conquered the city again. The walls were repaired and many new buildings were built during this period. In the Ottoman period, Antalya was used as a prince’s sanjak. The people continued to live in the castle and the port continued to be used. In 1972, it was declared a Protected Area, and the buildings were renovated and turned into the ones used today. There are approximately 3 thousand buildings in Kaleiçi.It is very enjoyable to just walk around the streets. If you are someone who likes to wander around the historical walls, Kaleiçi is perfect for you. You can examine the traces of the Ottoman, Byzantine and Seljuk on your walks. Then you can immerse yourself in the sea in Kaleici to relieve the heat of Antalya. Streets; full of taverns, restaurants, hotels, antique and souvenir shops. Travel does not end. But you can also get lost while traveling. It should not be forgotten that; Going off the road brings with it new adventures. So don’t worry about getting lost.
